🎵 Musical Journeys #5 | Helping Children Feel Safe to Sing Is the Heart of Music Education

Since last year, I’ve been occasionally writing about my teaching moments in music class. This is the fifth post in my Musical Journeys series, which I hope to continue more regularly this year.

This week’s story comes from a recent workshop experience.

On Saturday, March 15th, I attended the annual Tri-Chapter Workshop hosted by New York City’s three major music education associations: Orff, Dalcroze, and Kodály. This year’s workshop was organized by NYCCAOSA and led by Dena Byers, with the theme “Developing the Confident Musician.”

The workshop focused on using engaging teaching activities to help children develop compassion, courage, and confidence within a choral setting.

We began with voice and body warm-ups, followed by playful folk songs with body percussion, and finally practiced melodic improvisation using short singing syllables.

Sing for Joy, I Lift My Voice, Moonlight on Snow, Love is Love is Love is Love, and O Desayo.
We ended the session by singing several meaningful and beautiful songs.

Confidence doesn’t come from perfection. It grows where we feel safe.

I want to pin this at the top of my teaching journal. Because I, too, hope my classroom becomes a place where children feel safe enough to sing.
