Musical Journal #09|Leading the Dragon: From the Music Classroom to Japan Day Parade

上週六, May 10, 2025, 我參與了紐約市的 Japan Day Parade(日本節遊行),代表我所隸屬的教育團體 Forest House of Manhattan 出場,擔任該群的舞龍隊隊長(Dragon Team Leader),舉起龍頭走上 Central Park West!

Last week, I had the honor of performing in the Japan Day Parade in New York City, representing my community group Forest House of Manhattan as the Dragon Team Leader, proudly carrying the dragon’s head down Central Park West and performing at the red carpet zone on 72nd Street.

Forest House of Manhattan is a community full of memories. When I first moved to the Upper West Side, I couldn’t find any Chinese mom groups. Through chance, I met the moms at Forest House (also known as Kokokara Kids), and started joining picnics, sports days, and gatherings with my children.
Even though my kids have outgrown the group, I’ve stayed in touch with many of the moms. For the past two years, I’ve joined them in the Japan Day Parade — now as a performer, not just a parent!

This experience reminded me:
Art doesn’t only live in classrooms — it lives on the streets, in communities, and within our shared cultural rhythm.
